Yvonne Foong: Fighting NF

Article: Education standard

I am glad for moving to another college. Some people may think that the American Degree Program is a piece of cake, but it really is not that easy. Beginning this semester, our passing grade increased from 60% to 70%, which means I have to work harder.

In the past two semesters, I have been getting a 70% average. I know some courses in local colleges are very easy to pass. I have been there and thought something was not right. To me, education is about gaining knowledge and experience. Hence, even if I get a C average, but a high-standard C, I am content.

I heard the Psychology program at Help University College is even tougher.

A cousin studying in another college recently asked me if the passing grade in our ADP program was 50%, and if our marks were calculated over 50% coursework and 50% exam grades. If so, she was confident that passing would be easy for her should she decide to study with us.

I was stunned.

I decided to take Elemental Statistics, Principles of Sociology, Counseling techniques, and Abnormal Psychology this semester.

I decided not to take Biology yet, in favor of Sociology, because the latter may be a pre-requisite for many Psychology subjects in the future. I am not good in maths, and may need help from my friends.

Abnormal Psychology is the study of psychological disorders, the diagnosis, and treatment. Finally, I feel like a real psychology scholar.

Need to buy textbooks that other students like myself are not dependent upon since they can hear well. Maybe Prentice hall or McGraw-Hill. Do you have any recommendations?

Sometimes it’s not about the pass marks that matters, it’s more to do with the course itself. i.e. what the curriculum provides, how they make you think, and what the overall process is. In other words, I can give you an alphabetical test and require you to pass at 90%, is that easy or hard? Generally speaking, it’s a piece of cake. ;)

As for the books, I wouldn’t stay on a particular publisher. Do your research and ask for book recommendations in your study field. More than often, journals can also take you a very long way.

    All the best!

Hi KwangErn. I understand what you mean. But I believe when an educational institution require a high passing grade, it shows their commitment towards excellence. But I see your point, and so I believe there are many factors to be considered.

Yeah, it’s not the publisher that matters.

Maths here is easy. I failed the one in INTI, but got a B in the one here.

“But I believe when an educational institution require a high passing grade, it shows their commitment towards excellence.”

Imo, the quality of teaching, the facilities provided and the lecturers/staff hired is the thing that shows commitment. And i find my college wanting. *sigh*
