An engineer discovers a passion for cooking through experimentation.
WHEN he was in primary school, Eddie Wong’s teacher used to whack him on the hand with a ruler for having dirty fingernails.
His father, in fact, had a role to play in that.
Growing up in Kota Padawan, Kuching, Wong used to hang around his father, a chartered engineer, and the latter’s mechanic friends who would work on cars at home.
“Dad put me in charge of the parts cleaning department. Since he worked on his projects at night, I would go to school the next morning smelling (like motor oil), with dirt and grime under my fingernails,” wrote Wong on his website.
However, those were the times father and son bonded.
“I learned a lot from the old ‘motorhead’. One rainy season, we tore apart a motorcycle and rebuilt the whole engine in my bedroom. Mom was not too happy because my bed sheet looked like a mechanic’s greasy rag,” he added.
