Article: House Ear Institute 2009 Family Camp
This year, the House Ear Institute annual family camp will be held from 5th to 7th June, in Malibu, California. The cost including room and board is US$75 per person. Check out the camp information page here.
I really, really, really, wish I could go! In fact, I’ve always wanted to join HEI’s community outreach programs. Believe me, each time I visit them in L.A. I would surf their website and look out for upcoming activities. They even have tea party fundraisers and conferences from time to time.
The thing is, my surgery will be done on May 6th, next week. If all goes well, I will probably be out of hospital six days later. Mom and I would remain at Seton Guest Center for two or three more weeks depending on how soon I can again travel without feeling tipsy.
From experience, I should fully recover in a month. But sometimes, it might be quicker, and I’d be good to go in two or three weeks. If that happens then the camp date will still be a far way out!
The good thing is, our return flight date is open for further confirmation. MAS gave us open tickets.
Let’s hope, by the stroke of coincidence, somehow, I’d get to participate in the HEI Family Camp this year. It will certainly be a worthwhile experience spending time with children of another culture suffering from hearing loss. It will help me in my training to become a Psychologist.

Hello. Just came across your blog about the HEI Family Camp 2009. I go almost annually. (but missed this year’s).
I’m not sure if you did get the chance to go, as you were hoping. Hope the surgery is a great success.
FYI: The Deaf culture is not “suffering from hearing loss.” Only those who are not part of the Deaf culture and are audiologically deaf may and/or may-not see themselves as “suffering hearing loss.” But members of the Deaf culture do not. This would be good to know for your psychology studies.
