Article: First taste of academic freedom!
Recall that I am taking a course directly through Upper Iowa University’s independent study program? I have just mailed off my first unit coursework to the lecturer by regular postal mail. She resides in Illinois and if all goes well, I believe she will receive my submission in less than two weeks.
It was a good start. The textbook that she is using, ‘Human Services in Contemporary America’ by William Burger is a very elaborate but concise text. I would have thought that such a text is usually reserved for graduate studies because readers need to have a broad worldview in subjects such as law, politics, economics, history, and a very broad understanding of Psychology.
The first unit coursework questions werealso very nicely tailored. I need to refer back to the book and even re-read chapters in order to answer some questions. This applies to all sections – objective, short answer, and essay questions. It’s not possible to memorize the textbook without any comprehensive reading and expect myself to answer the questions confidently, Very unlike my previous study experiences at local institutions.
I am so glad to have started on the independent study program. It sure makes one feel autonomous when we are fully responsible for directing our studies!
