Individual initiative can be the most effective

Aunty YS speaking about the Foundation at a Toastmasters meeting

The amount of pledges gathered for A Celebration of Life foundation has exceeded RM20.000.00. Of this amount, RM15,000.00 came through Aunty Lee Yau Sin’s endeavor.

She had started off by making a RM6,000 pledge on Christmas eve which she revised to RM10,000 a week later.

Now, she is revising it again to RM15,000.00.

How did she do it?

Aunty YS is a passionate speaker and member of the AFC Toastmasters’ club where she spoke about me, Neurofibromatosis and the Foundation on 2nd January, and again at the Certified Professional Trainers alumni reunion on 3rd January 2013. Those who were present on those days contributed to her pledge. Besides these initiatives, Aunty YS also e-mailed her family and friends to invite their participation and contribution to her pledge.

I knew Aunty Yau Sin through Aunty Soo, a fellow member of Grace Church Shah Alam few years ago. Aunty Soo helped to raise funds for my brain surgeries then, and Aunty YS was one of the people she reached out to. Like Aunty Soo, Aunty YS has helped to raise thousands for my surgeries over the years whenever I needed treatment. When she read that I wanted to set up a charity foundation to help others last month, Aunty YS resolved to make my vision a reality immediately.

Ever since I decided to set up A Celebration of Life foundation, I have been met by several different reactions. Many people whom Syahidah and I spoke to thought that collecting RM1million was difficult or impossible. Some even felt I should not waste my time going through media channels, and that I should approach big corporations or the rich directly instead.

I can understand where they are coming from. Their opinion sounds logical, like common sense, isn’t it?

But from my years of experience raising funds and gaining public support, most of those who helped me raise tens of thousands were not the rich or the big corporations. They were the passionate individuals with humble backgrounds who could relate with me.

Aunty YS is one such person. Her pledge is the biggest so far. She maintains a personal blog at http://yausinblog.com/. Do check out her website to know who this passionate woman is.

A big thanks to all who has contributed to Aunty YS’ pledge.

If you would like to do your part like how Aunty YS is doing hers, you are encouraged to do so among your own family and friends. Thank you in advance!
