Article: Daorae Garden, Korean BBQ Restaurant

Last saturday, Cordy and Wai Kong treated Tracy and I to korean BBQ for dinner at Daorae Garden in USJ Taipan! That was my first time eating Korean BBQ, and boy, was it delicious!
When Cordy first mentioned korean BBQ, I wondered how it’s like. She said it’s a restaurant, but, BBQ INSIDE a restaurant???

It turned out to look exactly like an ordinary restaurant except for extra BBQ pits in the middle of tables. Reminded me of steamboat, but these pits had no water.

But not everyone sat the way we did. A raised platform at one part of the restaurant resembled a real Korean dining hall, giving away a false impression of actually being in Korea!

So, anyway, this BBQ uses real coal and not electricity to heat up the stove. When diners are seated, a waiter would lift the iron plank and place a bucket full of hot, burning coal before replacing the plank.

We ordered:
- Daeji Gal-bi, RM27
Pork ribs marinated in special sweet soy sauce - Dak Gal-Bi, RM27
Lean skinless chicken marinated in hot chilli sauce - O-jin-er Goo-e, RM27
Fresh squid marinated in hot chilli sauce

Meals come with Ban-Chan, free-of-charge Korean traditional side dishes that may be refilled.

One of the side dishes contained tiny seashells fried in chilli sauce. You are supposed to suck out the fillings at the tip, but I couldn’t do it, so here is Cordy demonstrating the technique. haha!

Although the BBQ pit was conviniently positioned in the center of our table, we didn’t actually have to cook food ourselves. Their waiters cooked for us while we watched in glutony. One time, Wai Kong tried flipping the food while it’s cooking and got apprehended by a waiter upon his return. haha! Just joking, but he was not supposed to cook the food himself.

Dipping in these sauce give extra taste to your food. It made my dinner taste a little sour and sweet, unleashing the trapped aroma.

You may either eat meat on their own or wrap them in free-flow lettuces that come in a small dish. This is where you get protein and minerals from Korean BBQ.
Excellent food and customer service, but they didn’t have much choices of dessert, so we headed across the road to one of the roadside hawker stalls and had… what do you call these?

The staffs were all very professional and approachable. Mostly foreigners and the boss was a Korean man who bowed to us when we left. We were in the lift and just before the door closed, he rushed out and bowed with a big smiling face. I was so stunned and rooted that I didn’t manage to return a bow. 유ê°?스러운!
If you’re feeling hungry after reading this review, why not try out the restaurant?

Hi Yvonne,
Korean barbecue is quite popular here in Japan. I was surprised by your reaction to it as a novelty. :-)) Which goes to show that I probably have been too long in japan, i forgot about the rest of the world…:D
One of my best friends was a Korean. She left this year to go back to work in Seoul. It makes me smile now, that she insisted we eat Korean food for everyone of our meals together. Thanks to her, I’ve never eaten Korean food so often here in japan! And your pictures brought back some memories…:-)
Anyway, this is just to say “Hello” and Thanks for the link to my site. You learnt of the existence of my country, and i learnt for the first time about Neurofibromatosis through your site. Thank you for broadening and enriching my life.

KC Hie! Actually, Korean food is quite common to some people in Malaysia, but I’m not so privileged as korean food can be very expensive here. This meal was a treat from my friend, Cordy, and that’s how I got the chance to write about it.
Don’t mention about linking you. I love reading your encounter with the Jigme, whom you respect so dearly. That’s remarkable!

Love the step by step picture description of your meal. have you tried their sister outlet in Desa Hartamas? Rain’s crew had their meals there when he was in town for his concert.
