The braces

I knew I needed to get my teeth aligned one day, it was just a matter of when I was going to do it. When I was in Standard 3, I told myself I would get it done in Standard 6. When I was in Standard 6, I said I would get it fixed in Form 3. And when I was in Form 3, I pushed it to Form 5.
I made the first trip to the orthodontist when I was in Form 5, and like all other services offered by the Government, I was put in a queue for 2 years. I was called in for treatment when I was in Form 6.
After having my mouth X-rayed, the orthodontist said that I already had all my 4 wisdom teeth and that I needed to extract 2 of them to make way for the bigger brackets. For 8 consecutive weeks, I had one of my teeth removed at the General Hospital. And yes, that leaves me with only 24 teeth now. And I am NOT kidding you =)
My orthodontist also explained to me that during a certain phase of my treatment, I would need to wear a head-gear for a minimum of 16 hours per day, otherwise my teeth would not budge. So I religiously wore the head-gear and even my Mum and sister thought I looked like an alien with it attached to my teeth (from my head, like a head-band).
Throughout the duration of the treatment, I could not eat chewing gums, I could not eat hard food-stuff and everytime I returned from seeing the orthodontist to have the braces tightened, all I could eat was porridge. And KFC’s mashed potatoes. I remember I broke one of the brackets attached to one of my teeth when I was eating a packet of muruku I bought from the pasar malam earlier..
I had my braces for 4.5 years, compared to the common 2-year treatments. My sister had it for 1 year and 9 months. I had 8 teeth removed, compared to the normal 4. And I put up with all those “sufferrings” because I am vain. I admit it =)

OMG. they made you wear a head gear? they never make me wear a head gear. goodness gracious. i only started wearing braces last Christmas. my orthodontist told me that it’ll be off in a year and a half. ah, my wisdom tooth is not out yet so, i think i’ll cost me a lot of trouble in the future.

Hi Pelf: I am slightly surprised that they make you wear headgear. Tells me that it has got to do with your skeletal structure.
Don’t worry, the kids here in NZ wear headgears too, but at night only. And don’t think that you are the worst one.. I have pts who need to undergo jaw surgery to correct their jaws.. what with all the slicing here and there!

Oh well.. don’t worry, the journey is a rewarding one!

ChengSim: I am not trying to scare you but my cousin had to have her wisdom teeth removed AFTER she removed her braces.. Imagine “thinking” that all the misery had ended and the orthodontist “drops the bomb”.. ARGH!
Sabrina: Yea, I wore the headgear but only for one or two months. I knew about it before I started treatment because my orthodontist made it very clear to me..
