Please understand that I don't agree with him.

My family and I have dealt with the healthcare industry in Malaysia, and through personal experience, I can say that corruption and money politics is a big problem. That's why the care of patients is compromised.

So I'm always supportive of Malaysians who want to seek more ethical healthcare overseas.

Jon Ling, I'm Hidayah Cynthia's hubby. Well, HUKM is good but I'm looking for the best. After back from US, I went to see HUKM doc's, they realised they're better. However I believed M'sian docs capable to be like them. My personel adviced, for time being, if you can't afford better go to govt hospital...if you can afford the cost better go abroad.

I decided to undergo the 2nd surgery in the US not 'for the glamour and the prestige' like John Ling said. :(. I did it because my condition was getting worse and I was told the tumour cannot be totally removed with minimal risk because it was too big ,6.2 cm. It was also a record for st. vincent medical center removing a tumour of that size. so, John Ling don't simply pass remarks about those opting to get treatment overseas. There's no glamor about trying to raise hundred of thousands ringgit..

Yvonne, it is true that doctor's opinion and familiar/expert with Neurofibrolmatosis 2 very important.

I explained to my friends about NF2. Most of them are not familiar with NF2, but they are familiar with brain tumors. I explained to them (for almost 1 hour), of the differences between NF2 and brain tumors only.

Only those doctors familiar and have knowledge in dealing/ treating NF2 knows about it, not those doctors who expert in brain tumors only. This is the line that we can use to define the doctors' expertise.

Per capita, the Malaysian government spends more on healthcare and research than many Western countries. But the outcomes are poorer.

It's not the amount of money that's being spent that's the issue. It's how it's being spent.

Evangeline: There are many medical research institutions in the U.S. and most of them are private establishments - they raise funds and fund their own research. Then, when they discover something or invent something, they put that knowledge into practice through their clinical services (translational research). So it boils down to whether the institution wants to excel or how they want to be excellent.

So far, in most KL medical institutions, I observe that their idea of excellence is in furnishing the building to resemble a five star hotel.

Syahidah, this reminds me that I had a friend with MRIs from the U.S. with her. But when she went to a particular neurosurgeon in KL for help in getting the government to assist in paying for her treatment, the radiologist that this neurosurgeon worked with asked her to do a new MRI as they thought the one she did at the U.S. national institutes of health was not clear. That's quite surprising because the U.S. NIH has more advanced medical diagnostic technologies than us.

I am sure you have realized that Dr. Friedman in L.A. could diagnose our condition even with low grade MRI scans from local government hospitals.
