Fundraising Purpose: To remove a brain tumor located at the left lateral ventricle. It is also known as a Trigone Meningioma.
When will this surgery be done?: November 2009
Hospital: St. Vincent Medical Center.
Doctors:
Dr. Gregory Lekovic M. D. (Neurosurgeon)
Dr. Marc Schwartz M. D. (Co - Neurosurgeon)
Diagnosis: Neurofibromatosis Type 2 - a genetic disorder that makes tumors grow in my brain, spine, and along peripheral nerves.
About this tumor: It is a Meningioma of the brain’s left lateral ventricle.
Why St. Vincent Medical Center?: I have had four brain surgeries at this hospital. It’s where my surgeons of five years from House Clinic operate on patients.
St. Vincent Medical Center was founded by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. It now forms the Daughters of Charity Health System. Since we are raising funds for my surgery ourselves, let us give that money to a good cause. St. Vincent Medical Center always discount my hospital fees. The money we pay them can be used to help other patients in need.
Why this Neurosurgeon: Before coming to House Clinic, Dr, Lekovic worked with Dr. Robert Spetzler at Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona for several years. Dr. Spetzler co-invented a technique to remove tumors of the lateral ventricles with lesser risk of vision loss.
This technique is called the Contralateral Transcallosal Approach. Traditionally, removing tumors of the lateral ventricles have been associated with high morbidity risk as they are located beneath the brain cortex. Removing them have traditionally required surgeons to cut through the cortex. With this new technique, however, experienced surgeons may now reach the lateral ventricles by going through the Corpus Callosum.
By going through the Corpus Callosum, there will be lesser risk of losing my right field of vision – a very real risk traditionally associated with the removal of this tumor.
Lucky for me. Dr. Lekovic learned this technique while he was at BNI. So I don’t have to go Arizona, Dr. Lekovic may remove my tumor right here at at St. Vincents!
When do you need the funds by: November 2009. Or sooner if the tumor starts to hurt me again.
How urgent is this: This tumor can eventually cause severe headache and the disruption of Cerebrospinal Fluid. As with most brain tumors, it may grow further and affect me more as time passes. It is better to remove it before it causes serious problems.

Why I need to raise funds
NF tumors and the problems they cause require expert medical care. Unfortunately, I am uninsured while the Malaysian government lack the expertise and technology required to care for people with this genetic disorder. My father is unfit to work after a brain haemorrhage more than ten years ago. My mother’s job is just enough to get us by So I need to organize fundraising campaigns to pay for my own healthcare locally and abroad. Inexperienced surgeons and poor treatments can leave me in a very bad shape. Already, my mother has to take care of dad and the household. I cannot add more burden to the family.
